A British motivational speaker named Michael Victor Lane was arrested on December 3, 2009 at a motel in Ventura, California for killing Ginger Candela. Mr. Lane, who is reported to be some kind of motivational speaker alledgely gave Ms. Candela a meditation session in her Las Vegas bedroom that ended with her murder. Police say Mr. Lane told them that he "hit Candela in the head several times with a frying pan and hung her from the end of the bed with an electrical cord around her neck until she died."
After which, he alledgedly cut the poor woman's body in 1/2, put it into a trash can and then poured bleach and other materials over the top of her remains. Police found the body a couple weeks after the murder in her garage.
Mr. Lane is currently out on bail in Las Vegas. The judge in the case set the Las Vegas bail at over $2 million. A judge has now combined the murder case with a an assault with a vehicle case. Mr. Lane faces the death penalty for the slaying and dismemberment of Ms. Candela. Although, the trial isn't expected to occur until January 2011.
The great length of time between the trial and Mr. Lane's arrest goes to show why bail and bail bonds are so important. The man was arrested in 2009 for a crime that happened in 2009. Yet he isn't going to trial until 2011. I have no idea whether Mr. Lane is guily or innocent. Hopefully the right person will be punished accordingly for this crime. However, if by chance Mr. Lane is innocent the ability to be released from custody on bail is invaluable. In addition, it allows someone who is presumed innocent to prepare for their trial from outside jail.
