The Las Vegas Justice of The Peace 3 election is getting interesting. Incumbent Tony Abbatangelo is having his track record on bail called into question by the other candidates.
The Las Vegas Justices of the Peace handle setting bail in addition to handling felony cases' initial arraignments and preliminary hearings before they move on the to District Court. Justices also oversee misdemeanor and small-claims civil cases to their completion.
The incumbent has 17 years on the job, but last year pleaded no contest to 1 count of misdemeanor battery domestic violence. As part of the sentencing, Abbatangelo had to perform community service and attend counseling for domestic violence for 6 months.
The controversy was further compounded by a recent bail that was set by Abbatangelo. He set a $7500 bail for an attempted murder suspect in March. Although the defendant had previously fled Nevada from a criminal investigation.
The $7500 Las Vegas bail amount is far less than the typical $100,000 amount that is normally set on an attempted murder case. The lawyer representing the defendant in question was Tony Pitaro, Abbatangelo's defense lawyer in his domestic violence case.
Is there something fishy going on with the incumbent in the Las Vegas Justice of The Peace election? It is tough to say for certain, but on thing is for sure. Stories like these don't help anyone's chances at the polls.
